This usage derived from the royalist opponents of the French Revolution, known as the “Whites” because they adopted the white flag of the French Bourbon dynasty. The Whites depicted the revolution as an assault of Russia by foreign ideas and the Reds justified their revolution as a reaction against foreign exploration. Both posters are similar in attempting relate Russia’s Civil War. To the right, the poster titled “Comrade Lenin cleans the world of filth” depicts Vladimir Lenin sweeping away western capitalists and monarchs. To the left, the poster titled “Victim of the International” depicts revolutionaries sacrificing the soul of Russia to a statue of Karl Marx with biblical themes. Two contrasting visions of the Russian Civil War by White (Pro imperial) and Red (Bolshevik) forces. More specifically, it meant those who fought against the Soviet Red Army in the Russian Civil War (1918 to 1921). By the 1920s, the term was more commonly used for Russians who’d opposed the Bolshevik Revolution and supported the imperial government. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the term “White Russian” described ethnic Russians living in the area between Russia and Poland (today this includes Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia and Moldova).
